Hypervalent iodine chemistry has developed into a vibrant and highly versatile field, providing powerful reagents and catalytic strategies for modern organic synthesis. Hypervalent iodine compounds combine distinctive reactivity with attractive practical features and have increasingly found applications beyond synthetic methodology, including medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, materials science, and industrial chemistry.
The International Conference on Hypervalent Iodine Chemistry (ICHIC) has accompanied and fostered this development for more than two decades, providing a dedicated forum where researchers from around the world can exchange ideas, present emerging concepts, and establish new collaborations. Since its first edition in Kallithea, Greece, in 2001, the conference has travelled across Europe and Asia, reflecting the increasingly international character of the hypervalent iodine community.
Following the successful ICHIC 8 held at Nankai University in Tianjin in 2025, ICHIC 9 will bring the community together again in Barcelona, at IQS, on 5–8 July 2027. The scientific programme will showcase the latest advances in the synthesis, structure, bonding and reactivity of hypervalent iodine compounds, as well as their applications in catalysis, organic synthesis and related areas.
